Project Transcend
Intervention: Classical Group Dance and Mental Health Group Healing
The Gender Interactive Alliance (GIA) is committed to fostering mental health and emotional resilience in marginalized communities through innovative approaches. Our intervention combines classical group dance with mental health group healing sessions, designed to provide an inclusive and culturally resonant space for participants.
Pilot Program Results:
We assessed the impact of our intervention using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), administered before and after the workshops in a validated Urdu translation. The participants (n=12) self-reported their psychological distress levels, revealing significant improvements post-intervention.
Pre-Intervention Participant Distribution:
– Well: 2 participants
– Mild Disorder: 1 participant
– Moderate Disorder: 4 participants
– Severe Disorder: 5 participants
Post-Intervention Participant Distribution:
– Well: 2 participants
– Mild Disorder: 4 participants
– Moderate Disorder: 5 participants
– Severe Disorder: 1 participant
Impact Summary:
The intervention led to notable positive shifts in psychometric scores, demonstrating the potential of creative and healing arts to alleviate psychological distress:
– Average Change in Psychometric Scores:
– 3.7 points improvement among participants with any disorder (excluding those scored “Well”).
– 3.25 points improvement across all participants.
– Score Improvement by Pre-Test Category:
– Well: +1 point
– Mild Disorder: 0 points
– Moderate Disorder: +2.25 points
– Severe Disorder: +5.6 points
These results highlight that the intervention contributed the most substantial improvement among participants with severe psychological distress, with an average score reduction of 5.6 points.
Reduction in Severe Distress:
A significant reduction was observed in the number of participants scoring in the “Severe Disorder” category, dropping from 5 (42% of participants) to 1 (8% of participants) post-intervention—a decrease of 36 percentage points.0
Conclusion:
Our pilot program demonstrates that classical dance combined with mental health group healing can effectively improve psychological well-being, particularly for those experiencing severe distress. This approach aligns with GIA’s mission to integrate traditional cultural practices with mental health interventions, offering holistic healing opportunities to marginalized communities.
Community Centre for transgender community
GIA established a community center in 2009. It’s a residential facility for the Trans-genders. However, it’s aiming to provide home shelters to adults, institutional care is considered to be transient care. This means that the shelter is not only providing them with a permanent address, but it also gives them an opportunity to acquire education and learn vocational skills.
The aim of this center is to be responsible for a holistic psychosocial development of the Transgender. Once they acquire confidence in themselves, we helped them to move out in society as responsible adults and earn their living.
Moreover, community center is also provided care and support to PLHIVs trans-genders by taking care through referral support system with government center to ensure their confirmatory test and timely availability of ARVs only those PLHIVs are taken care of who are belong to far/rural areas and unable to move and reach out to government center.
