Gender Interactive Alliance Pakistan

Pakistan’s first transgender led technical agency

Pakistan & the anti-gender movement

About us

WHAT IS GIA?

Gender Interactive Alliance, or GIA, is a transgender-led technical agency, founded by the renowned transgender rights activist, Bindiya Rana.

Gender Interactive Alliance (GIA) started work for the transgender community in 2002 as a support group. Our initial focus was on addressing health inequities affecting the marginalised transgender community, while bringing to the front voices from the community. GIA registered as a legal entity and a community-based organisation in 2009. Since then, we have worked closely with policymakers, legislators, and other stakeholders to create an enabling environment for transgender rights.

GIA has worked on community empowerment, community system strengthening to address HIV and AIDS infections, and addressing gender-based violence.

Since 2023, GIA has shifted its focus to combatting the global anti-gender and trans-critical movement, while strengthening the capacity of local actors and movements for a sustainable future.

March for justice against violence on Transgenders

Officials of the Gender Interactive Alliance (GIA), transgender community members, and allies organized a walk on Independence Day, during which they unfurled the largest flag of Pakistan. On this significant day, the transgender community called for justice and advocated for the fundamental right to live with dignity, emphasizing that this right is inherent to every individual, regardless of gender identity.

Advocacy seminars on gender based violence against transgenders

The Gender Interactive Alliance (GIA) has actively engaged in numerous high-impact panel discussions across diverse platforms, including universities, colleges, and government institutions. These discussions have focused on advocating against fundamental issues such as gender-based violence, particularly within civil society, and addressing critical health concerns, including trans-specific health and mental health challenges. GIA has provided a platform for the transgender community to share perspectives, best practices, and lived experiences in combating discrimination and other systemic challenges faced by the community.

Transgenders Advisory Group for Transgender Persons Act 2018

The Gender Interactive Alliance (GIA) has established a support group dedicated to advocating for amendments to the Transgender Protection Bill, addressing conflicts identified in the initial draft that did not fully align with the needs of the transgender community. In collaboration with grassroots community members and technical experts, the GIA team has developed a revised version of the bill that better reflects the rights and protections necessary for transgender individuals.

OUR MISSION

We are devoted to leveraging the rich knowledge and wisdom embedded in the khawajasira culture to advocate for not only gender and sexual rights but also environmental protection, social harmony, and economic justice. Drawing from a deep well of indigenous values, we engage with policy makers, legislators, and various stakeholders, championing intersectional activism that transcends gender and sexuality to forge an environment where every individual can realize their potential without prejudice. We foster community-driven initiatives that are led and run by members of the transgender, khawajasira, and intersex communities, fostering awareness, education, and empowerment in Pakistan and paving the way for a society that celebrates diversity and inclusivity.
